Death of ‘The ‘Rev’ and UK Afterlife Campaign.

The UK’s media seems to be dominated by the same old recession stories, news on how another celebrity couple have split up, and how we’ve been told for the past 5 years a certain food product has been good for us and how now it’s suddenly detrimental to our health?
Yet normally our Media seems to be quick in announcing the death of a famous icon who has inspired many people throughout their daily lives; Michael Jackson, Brittany Murphy just to name a few. So what happened in the case of ‘The ‘Rev’ (James Sullivan)? Why did mainstream UK Media channels fail to report his death aside from the obvious music devoted institutions such as Kerrang?
I understand that they can’t report every famous death that happens, yet for a band that sold 500,000 copies of their 2007 self-titled album; reaching no. 4 in the US pop charts, I believe that it should have been reported as well as having some of the many tributes that have been flooding in mentioned. In fact an Avenged Sevenfold fan called Laithan Morisco-Tarr also thought this, so he decided to do something about it…
If you’re an avid FaceBook fan, I’m sure you will have noticed “The Official “Afterlife” For UK Number 1 In Memory Of The Rev.” We had a chat with Laithan to see exactly what inspired him to create the group:
Jamie: “Obviously the recent RATM campaign must of inspired you to create the group to try and get ‘Afterlife’ to number 1, but what actually made you think ‘I’m actually going to do this’?”
Laithan: “The RATM campaign was no doubt a prime example of how powerful social networking sites can be, which I found to be quite scary, but it showed me how a community of like minded people can come together with strength in numbers, and affect something as important as the Christmas number 1. I have been a dedicated fan of Avenged Sevenfold for many years now and to hear the death of James ‘The Rev’ Sullivan was a huge shock for me, as it was for many other fans. His death was barely reported in the mainstream media in the UK, so I thought it would be a great idea to get an Avenged Sevenfold song to number 1 in the UK to raise awareness of the band in the same way that the profile of RATM had been raised.”
A vast amount of Avenged fans seem to be agreeing with Laithan. “I totally agree with Afterlife for No.1 If rage can get there A7X can and what better tribute to Jimmy” said Rosie on Kerrang.com
We then asked Laithan:
Jamie: “How have ‘The Rev’ and ‘Avenged’ themselves impacted your life through their music?”
Laithan: “Being a die-hard rock & metal fan and an avid guitarist, the band had appealed to me from the moment I listened to their music (the first song being Beast and the Harlot in 2005). I bought their City of Evil album and I instantly fell in love with the music! I worked with one of the admins of the group (Christian Venables) in 2007 where we found out our common adoration for the band. I was lent the All Excess DVD which was the moment where I warmed to each person in the band, particularly the Rev who was a quirky and eccentric character, but also a complete genius. Every time I listen to an Avenged Sevenfold song, his technical genius stuns me – the way he alters the beat to change the atmosphere in a song is incredible (Unbound (The Wild Ride) is brilliant for atmosphere).
Sadly I fear that he is irreplaceable; he was a carefree character, an awesome singer, a talented drummer, and a brilliant songwriter. The Rev was a unique musician and the impact of his death has sent shock-waves through the music world. He will be sorely missed and my condolences go to his family and friends.”
RockStopScene shall update you when anymore news on this tragic and devastating death are released. Until then please leave us your comments on how Avenged Sevenfold & The Rev have changed your life below.

I Agree. Jimmy Was Not Only A Very Talented Drummer But A Talented Lyricist (If Thats A Word) And An Eccentric Character. Avenged Sevenfold Will Not Be the Same Without Him, I Find It Wrong That His Death Was Not Publicised As I Happen To Find Them A Lot More Inspiring And Famous than Say Jade Goody. I Have Joined This Facebook Group And Hope Other Avenged Sevenfold Fans Will Also Join.

Great article, Jamie.
I too fully support the plea to get an A7X song to number one, but a part of me can’t help but think people will see this as a ploy to ride on the wave of RATM’s success. Sure this is nothing of the sort, but the RATM group has opposing the X Factor; it had something that was incredibly publicized in the mainstream media to act a a lowest common denominator. This does not have that, and so I fear it will not reach the same level of success.
Still, great read – and Lucy, yes “Lyricist” is a word =]

Great article man…It still hasn’t sunk in, I’ve been listening to Avenged non-stop lately and it’s just completely unexpected.
I had the priviledge of seeing them at Sonisphere 2009 and meeting them, me and my friend Phil (in the photo) were speaking to Jimmy for a while, singing with him and having and a laugh…we managed to get him to shout “STALLION DUCK” (Avenged fans should know what that is) and it was probaby the best hour of my life. As they left, I remember (and I forgot who said it, me or Phil) “If we don’t ask we might never get the chance again” and that’s how the photo got taken.
Thier music has given me such good memories with my close friends, The Rev must never be forgotten. He was literally crazy!

Great article Jamie. A fitting tribute to a great musician. I’m behind the Facebook campaign. Not sure it will be as successful as the RATM campaign, as the original go is usually the most successful and RATM had a battle to wage (battling the XFactor). That being said, I would love for it to be as successful, to get A7X a huge hit that would bring them to the attention of people who previously didn’t know who they were. Would be a great and fitting tribute to ‘The Rev’ and it would be great to join with other A7X fans to show our distress at the very sad news. RIP Jimmy, may your memory and genius live on through your family, band mates and army of fans x x

Agree with the afterlife to number 1 group. Really want it too happen.

I almost cried when i found out that Jimmy had passed away, it would be a tribute to his memory if afterlife reached number 1. He was a hero of mine and all of A7X are my heros it is upseting when any death happens but it seems like the world does not care. I like most music from A7X to laddy Ga Ga i complatly support what this campaign is trying to acheive. R.I.P Jimmy gonna miss what you brought to music and thank you for the insperation you gave meany people.

i also believe the rev was amazaing at everything he did and there are many songs by avenged sevenfold that would work in these circumstances but afterlife is the most fitting right now and that is why i have joined the group on facebook. When i heard about the news i cried and i still do now and it is hard to watch him in videos and listen to the music because all i can hear is the drums and he really is inspiring but i will never forget him or avenged sevenfold and i hope the guys stay strong but there is no other drummer like the rev.

As an A7X fan, I am shocked at is deah, even more shocked that only Kerrang reported it, wtf why wasn’t it reported in the news or aything. He was an amazing drummer, I only found out about nhis death today, after 3 fucking days…no news about it until today, fucking appaling, so I am going to post on my twitter, and help that facebook campaign as much as i can, i’ll buy that single as many times as i can.
A7X for no.1 baby!!!!!!

This is a load of crap. You copied my idea. Zacky Vengeance asked me to create a group to get Avenged to UK number one before the Rev even died. So I set up a group and started gathering members and then Jimmy died and you set up your group. I dont see why this is the “OFFICIAL” group when in fact my group is known about by Zacky Vengeance and yours isnt. If you want the real group, the original one then here it is. Interview me instead yeah cos I came up with the idea before this guy!!!!

He copied your idea? You copied this straight off the back of the RATM campaign, just like anyone else. The point of the ‘Afterlife’ campaign is to be in memory of ‘The Rev’, he wrote the song and the lyrics are closely related to the same unfortunante fate that he met.
Why on earth would one of the band members ask you to start off the campaign? Anyone could claim to have been asked by ‘Zacky’, yet where’s your solid proof? And not just any e-mail that could be faked.
I’m sorry, I’m just slightly mad at how bad you’ve reacted to this just because your group only has 271 members.
The ‘Afterlife’ campaign has had support from, ‘Slash’ and ‘Good Charlotte’ so it has an extremely high chance of getting the song to a top 10 slot, as apposed to yours which in my opinion has just been made to try and grab some limelight.
