This Years Winner Is
An enthusiastic guitar & drum duo catapult us straight into the action faster then Katie Price’s exit at the recent VTA awards. ‘Hit And Hope‘ the first track of unsigned rockers This Years Winner Is, perhaps has to be one of the most up-beat energetic songs I’ve ever heard; a positive backed by a couple of negatives.
Vocalists Tim Tonks, and Ben Wilde definitely have great vocals suited to their genre separately, yet when together it’s mediocre at best. Starting, and finishing lines at the same time seem to be a problem for the band whether it’s done intentionally or not, I don’t know, but it does seem to overshadow some of the good elements that the song has; such as the catchy lyrics, and seemingly good timing when together on the chorus. Still as a result the song is saved from succumbing to an empty black abyss of doom where your only friend is one of Duffy’s albums *shudders*.
‘Nobody Knows That I’m An Attention Seeker.’ Although I’m afraid to say devoted readers you do now! Apart from allowing me to bask myself in self-centred glory, ‘coz we all know I iz da best writar eva righttt?’ It’s also the name of TYWI’s second single that really is a leap up in quality from the previous song.
Instruments and vocals actually seem to work in harmony more with each other, providing a more professional effect then the previous song (proven by an excellent build-up to the chorus). Furthermore the vocals are separated, an effective guitar solo happens around the 1.50 mark, and the song as a whole seems to have a much greater depth and air about it.
TYWI have one major quality that sets them apart from many other unsigned bands, the willingness to play for charity: “In mid July 2009 we played our first gig in London in aid of the Great Ormand Street hospital.” Being serious here for a change guys, how many unsigned bands do you know who actually put others before themselves? The answer is most likely very little. So please check out their Myspace, follow them on Twitter, and even let them know what you’ve had for dinner! – Ok maybe that would be a little creepy…
Final Thoughts: The band without a doubt have the right image, yet they really need to rectify some of the twinned vocal issues. With a few changes they really do have a chance of entering the ‘rock sphere’ and I wish them all the best with it!
Missed the myspace link above? Then here it is again. Aren’t I nice? : Link
