Hello, welcome! Pull up a chair and sit down.. but first a word of advice: ‘Never get a Wolf’s attention by pulling it’s tail‘.  The reason why my friend is not because a Twilight fanatic will think you’re trying to viciously destroy one of their ‘favouritez charactarz!!1!’ Nor is it in any way related to the fate that poor Little Red Riding Hood is to meet in a sequel. In fact it’s the ever so epic, and effulgent EP of ‘Shadows Chasing Ghosts‘ a band quickly on the verge of becoming a household name.

Let’s quickly get one thing clear; they’re not going to become an “household name” in the conventional way of ‘MTV superstars’. The band does incorporate screamo, which as a critic I’m extremely aware  isn’t ‘every-one’s cup of tea’. But for anyone who loves it or even finds it bearable, please do read on as I’m sure you will be pleasantly surprised to say the least.

SCG do one thing inordinately well, merging the realms of abundant screamo with emotive lyrics to create a unique Escape The Fate/Finch format that’s ever so pleasing to our trained and divine ears. Noticeable as early as the first 10 seconds of  ‘Searchlights‘ the bands first track on their MySpace, they really know how to entice their potential fans, and with style!

A common pattern within the post-hardcore genre is to have intense vocals, yet barely mediocre guitar & drum performances. You’ll be glad to know that SCG utilize both these instruments to their full capacity providing an overall energetic, up-beat, indefatigable sound ultimately leading to; remarkable riffs, and ever so powerful drum beats.

All the songs follow a similar format, that admittedly can seem a bit too much of the same after a bit. Yet things are shook up with the track ‘Needle’ a song containing no-screamo, and full of emotive and ‘straight-from-the-heart’ music. The acoustic version provides a lovers paradise, while the normal one has more of a slight ‘Blink-182′ twang to it. Emphasis on the world slight there.

The video for ‘Thumbelina’s Story‘ is produced to a exceptionally professional standard managing to be simple, yet intriguing at the same time.  The editing having a nice ‘Post-hardcore’ polish to it really sets the bands place in stone within this dying genre.  Bands  like SCG are actually vastly restoring faith within it, and helping to rejuvenate the bare roots of the diverse sub-genre.

With world-wide dates planned for 2010, and a close to bursting MySpace following; things can only go up for SCG, lets just hope it’s not that Wolf’s tail.

Final thoughts: Shadows Chasing Ghosts really are an accomplished and successful band that are finally starting to receive the popularity they thoroughly deserve. They seem like great lads, and I cant help but wish them all the best in future.
