Since bursting on to the pop-rock scene with their debut album Take Off Your Colours, You Me At Six have received countless amounts of acclaim for the way they have ‘revolutionized’ the genre as we know it. Gone are the days where you had to be some form of  ‘rocker’ to even appreciate the lighter sides of rock, YM@6 who are inundated with fans from both sides of the music spectrum, have set such a high standard that many unsigned bands will struggle to ever comprehend.

Today one of their new songs The Consequence was released for download. Of course, you need to sign up to the YM@6 website first and with that comes the optional newsletter section. I myself unchecked it due to the amount of things you can find out via the bands Myspace, and Kerrang, but it may be useful to some of you?

One of the first things you’ll notice about the track is Consistency. Yep that’s right it’s the usual YM@6 sound, but that’s not to say it’s a bad thing, no not at all. In fact far from it, it’s this sound that we’ve grown to love and constantly crave; so thank you YM@6 for feeding our array of guilty pleasures! Although, I must admit the song does have a few ‘minor problems’. The 18 second long sirens during the first portion of the song  are entirely un-needed, especially when you have background noise making you think the song hasn’t even started…..

After this minor inconvenience we actually enter some top-notch stuff. A simple yet effective guitar builds us up to the start of the song (with the drummer joining in after a few seconds) and finally we’re joined by Josh’s ever so recognisable vocals. The Consequence is best described as a more energetic Kiss and Tell; foot-tapping beats, and catchy lyrics that are sure to infect anyone with an exceptional taste in music. In fact I would probably go as far to say that the song is influenced by some of the bands earlier stuff such as the epic Promise Promise. Why? During the final portion of the song we’re joined by some background screamo vocals, slightly disappointing as they’re quite hard to hear but nevertheless it’s nice to see that the band haven’t forgotten their roots.

What else is there to say? The band has created a phenomenal song that in my opinion merges all the band has been through; Past: Screamo elements, Present: Kiss and Tell, Future: New Album elements.  I myself haven’t heard any of the new songs other then this, but I think it’s safe to say that there will be some new unique components; attracting new and old fans alike.

Overall:

Positives

+ Familiar YM@6 Sound; fans of the previous album are in for a treat.

+ Extremely energetic, great crowd pleaser.

+ Free Track!

Negatives

- Sirens during the beginning are slightly annoying.

- Screamo can only be faintly heard in the background, needs more of a presence.
